mso-font-kerning:14.0pt">A sexy room is a combination of several elements carefully selected, arranged, and tweaked to materialize and form a space that evokes emotions that make you feel sexy. You know it when you feel it, and it is unmistakable. It is a product of a multi- sensory experience. A bathroom is no different; however it does lend itself to the application of some elements that are particularly suited to bath use. Here are a few tips to increase your bath's sex appeal.

1. Functionality...

            Not only can the space function but does it function. Humans will do what humans will do....not what we tell them, and even guided, old habits die hard. A visually beautiful bath may look perfect, but the test comes when the owner lives in it. If it doesn't function simply and easily, it’s like a mannequin dressed to the nines...no heart no soul....empty...vapid is not sexy.

2. Sexy is Primal, Basic to Nature...

            Include natural materials. Natural stone, including granite, marble, slate, and limestone (all must be sealed). Man-made quartz solid surfaces work as long as they are paired with woods, and metals. Avoid synthetics. Integrate metal with your fixtures, even sinks and tubs. For modern or contemporary looks be sure to mix in wood, preferably with a satin finish with grain showing for contrast to the sleek tile, and other modern surfaces. Too much gloss is dated- unless on extremely high end Euro-Style cabinets…dated is not sexy. Gloss, matte, honed and satin finishes are available in most all materials these days, including metals.

3. Its all about the Water…

            Water is sexy...on it's own with no help. We want to see it flow, fall, drip and cascade...we want to vaporize it and surround ourselves with it. We love the sound it makes when hitting a copper sink, the trickle over a fountain, and the feel of the shower spray. Choose faucets that accentuate these. Faucets that allow you to see the water flow, waterfalls, tall ones that create long pipes of water, vessel sinks, and wall mount faucets are perfect. In the shower, a hand shower, wall head, and rain head are all essentials, on a diverter to function individually or in tandem to surround the body with water. Full body sprays are another way to surround yourself. Consider a steam shower, as the combination of heat, and vapor is inherently sexy! Use mirror freely, it mimics the waters reflective qualities.

4. Effective Lighting is Essential...

            Different tasks require different types of lighting in a bath as in any other room. All too often you walk into a bathroom and you will have vanity lighting, and some type of ceiling lighting intended to flood the entire room, often on the same switch. This is common even in large baths. Separate vanities should each have their own controls, a shower or bath light should function individually as well, ceiling lighting on yet another. All should be on dimmers. If you must have the lighting on one switch, play with the wattage level in each fixture until you find to a pleasing ambience.

5. Let a Bathroom be a Bathroom…

            If you don't have enough room to put the toilet in a separate room, don't try some 60's- 70's half wall to hide it, or try to slip pass code and put it in a too tiny room of its own. If a divider of some sort is wanted, satin or clear glass, a privacy drape (either functional or not), shoji screen, even blinds, strategically placed work well. In smaller spaces leave the toilet exposed. Common sense will allow your subconscious mind to put it all together without overkill.

An anti-tip, if you will. Please only use clear or satin glass in your tub and shower surrounds, unless you are restoring or designing in period style!

Take a look at these stunning SEXY We are usually high on love, warmth, caring and respect with a rediscovered eye to what is truly important to us...re-evaluating who, what and where we are. What a perfect time to cast that eye towards our own environments.

This new vision gives us the luxury of sifting through that which has no use, is outdated, no longer pleases us, or is simply tired. Today's focus is on just how to start that daunting task, and keep the journey fresh as it unfolds throughout your year. To every thing there is a season so the saying goes, and interior design and decorating falls wonderfully into seasons...seasons defined by your individual lifestyle. However, like anything worthwhile, you will want to take a little time to plan.

To that end I offer a start..."Plan your Work, and Work your Plan". Or as I prefer it, "PL& (D) your Work...(just a little designer humor there!)

I hope these ideas are helpful as you look around and evaluate your surroundings...Please feel free to leave any comments, questions, and additions as they are always welcome.

     You're sitting having coffee perusing Better Homes and Garden, House Beautiful, Traditional Home, Architectural Digest, or some other fabulous design magazine and looking around wondering "why can't I live in a place like this..." What would be the ideal use for them...how could they enrich your day to day life if changed? This includes pieces of furniture as well.

image via younghouselove.com

     2. How does the flooring look-

   Is your carpet clean and fresh or dingy and matted? Wood floors scratched and dull or rich and full of depth? Tile grout accentuating the tile or making you a bit nauseous? Maybe a change is in order?

     3. Do your appliances work- Are they up to date...are they harvest gold, coppertone, or avocado?

image via sodahead.com

     4. Are your window coverings or lack there of functioning as well as they should? Could you use a decor strengthener or two?

     5. Look at your fabrics, furnishings and drapes- Are they worn, stained, sun-faded or even threadbare? Be brutal, it's worth it...

    6. Are your cushions or pillows flat or sagging...is that once perfect sofa too deep or too low for you now?

image via newreplacementfoamsofacouchcushions.com

     You don't have to stop there of course, but once you have your list start what business planners call "Blue-sky thinking". What would you want without limits- then start planning. Create a folder for your Blue-sky ideas and add clippings from those magazines you looked through earlier and anything else that strikes your fancy. Date and tab your files so you know when and how your taste progresses.

     Once you get a good start you can look a little deeper to find out just what is involved with each item. A room conversion, addition, or remodel will be 4-8 months minimum, a redesign can be 4- 12 weeks depending on the extent of the work. A mini makeover can be 2-8 hours, while painting can happen over a weekend. A sofa can be redesigned with new cushions, new fabric, and a new life in 4- 6 weeks depending on the fabric availability and complexity.

image via vhsdrafting.com

     Plan each project big and small around your life and schedule. When are the kids in school, when do you go on vacation, when do you have guests. When are your high energy times, when are you fatigued...these affect decorating projects more than you may imagine!

     Pencil in each idea and time frame, then work your plan...all year long you will have something wonderful to look forward to, and even if you miss a few items you will still have the results of your work and be just a bit closer to that magazine look you love!

     If you feel a bit overwhelmed perhaps you may need some professional advice. Most Interior Designers can adapt their consultation platform to allow for some type of overview and planning package, either on an hourly basis or some other program. These are usually perfect for reviewing your completed list, or starting from scratch, and can give you a little inspiration to take over on your own, or even build a complete plan with the designer for the year. The most important thing is to have fun and enjoy your world as it all falls into place over time!

2010 AIA Austin Tour of Homes Overview

The 2010 AIA Austin Tour of Homes opened Saturday October 2 to record attendance. Estimates were that nearly 6000 tickets were sold, up from about 4000 last year. From my stand atop the staircase at Hugh Randolph Architect's house on the tour as a Docent, I would say that may be low for the actual attendance.

Perhaps it was the large number of remodels on the tour this year, or the real or imagined homage to "Mid- Century Modern" driven by the television series "Madmen" that brought in such record numbers. Certainly remodels are perceived to be more accessible to the average individual, especially in this economy. Maybe it was the glamorous jet set imagery that reminded many of us of the Sean Connery "James Bond" movies of the 60's, "Matt Helm" with Dean Martin, or even James Coburn’s "Our Man Flint".

There were definitely trends showing up, interestingly quite consistent, although with different manifestations in each house, as interpreted by the individual firms. Minimalism was a definite theme with extreme attention to detail, especially where tricky installations were involved as with integrated cabinetry containing everything from refrigerators, pantries, televisions, closets and fireplaces...you name it, it was seamlessly integrated into a wood, stone or sheetrock marvel. Small or even missing baseboards with tiny reveals added to the sleek tailored feel of the properties.

Exposed door and cabinet hardware, in particular barn door track systems could be seen in most every house, including some used on frameless glass shower doors for an entirely new effect. Strong horizontals, mixtures of wood species both exotic and common, and multi surface glass finishes all added immense interest to the open plan spaces.

In kitchens and baths Caeserstone, Silestone, and Natural Soapstone countertops led the way, with cantilevered cabinets, and rectangular glass tiles shown in vertical and horizontal installations that extended beyond the typical backsplash field. This was the year of the "party shower" huge with floor to ceiling windows, and "Hollywood Superstar" closets- expansive, and ultra functional with glittering chandeliers.

Most definitely the Architects challenge, and the creativity it inspires is it's own reward, and thankfully ours as well. Congratulations to all the Firms, individuals, and Builders involved in this years Tour for a stellar presentation.

I will be writing more about each individual house over the next couple weeks, so please stay tuned.!

Images below from AIAAustin.org

Webber + Studio, Architects - 2010 JH Jackson Photography

Third:Land, Inc. - 2010 JH Jackson Photography

Nick Deaver Architect - 2010 JH Jackson Photography

John Mayfield Architect - 2010 JH Jackson Photography

James D. I do not love the phenomenon generally referred to as Tuscan style that has been regurgitated ad nauseam all over central Texas for about the last 15 years.

What started in the mid nineties, as an Italian countryside influence quickly became an obsession for all too many in the design and building community. By the year 2000, I would guess 90% of the new homes were Tuscan "inspired" design, and it seemed every new client wanted Tuscan style interiors. Every wall was glazed, and mouldings were fauxed stone, or a warm French walnut color. Cabinets were fruit wood stained, or medium walnut, knotty alder, or cherry, some were painted, dry brushed, and antiqued in every contrived application possible. (Note that I also love faux work and trompe l'oeil when used with restraint and and a keen eye for appropriate application)

Certainly a cash cow, for this was what the buyers demanded, every house began to look the same. Parade homes and showcases of 5 -6 properties became one huge single house, as you couldn't tell where one ended and the next began.

Admittedly, I designed my share of "Tuscan style" rooms and homes, but I always insisted that they reveal something about the client, and not be just another "showroom" look. I preferred to add influences or touches of styles and or movements as they are always welcome. Antiques were essential, and other found pieces intermixed with new purchased items.

At last it seems we have come to a new era...in design that is. Gone is the need for autumn color palettes, severely over sized furniture, and rooms so full you can't navigate them without losing your balance. Perhaps in response to the economic downturn, a more tailored, simple, even minimalist approach has spread throughout the rank and file of designer, builder, and most importantly client.

We are now seeing what are being termed "De- Tuscan" projects, where new colors, finishes, and textures are replacing the same- ol' same- ol'. Darker walnut colored stains, and blonde wood tones are replacing the medium walnut and fruit-wood colors. Clear flat paint accented with bright colors, or cooler spa colors with chocolate browns and even reds are taking over. Heavy chenille covered upholstery is being redone in lighter colors with accent pillows, and smaller scale furnishings are replacing oversized pieces. Multiple styles and infuences are being requested, and most notably mid-century modern elements are now de rigueur!

As we are at the forefront of this new trend, my de-tuscanizing projects are in the planning stages, or incomplete, but I have scanned the web and found some excellent examples of spaces that can easily be re imagined as previously "tuscanized", and I have provided hypothetical notes on how the changes were made.

In order to redeem myself from the die hard Tuscan fans, and those clients whose homes I have designed in the style, I thought I might begin with one of my favorite "Tuscan Style" rooms from my own portfolio, and the 2002 Women's Symphony League of Austin's Designer Showhouse.

The above bedroom photo represents what I believed to be Tuscan inspired style. It reminds me of what I experienced while traveling in Italy, spaces that had history, or implied history...a story to tell. A collection of found pieces, gifts, or inheritance...comfortably, naturally together. Although this space was designed for a Symphony Showhouse, the only new furniture and furnishing pieces are the bed custom made for the room by Durham Trade and Design, and the mirror chest from John Edward Hughes. All other pieces are antiques from Negrel Antiques, and Jean Marc Frey Antiques here in Austin. Drapery and bedding custom for the space.

mediterranean staircase design by san francisco architect Ashford Associates

It would be easy to imagine this space with multi brown tone glazed walls, large heavy tapestries on the upper walls, and floor to ceiling chenille drapery panels with swag tops and buillion fringe. Here we feel the crisp open feeling of negative space, illuminated by natural light, and halogen rope lighting.

eclectic family room design by philadelphia interior designer Barbara Pettinella

Here simple color changes in bright accents create a fresh update to what might easily have been a glazed wall in neutral colors.

mediterranean living room design by san francisco interior designer Amoroso Design

I particularly like the way this space retains what might have been an original medium-dark stained mantle and beams, but lightened the builtin cabinet. Off white walls, and ceiling, lighter fabric print draperies, more tailored and modern furniture complete the process.

mediterranean living room design by san francisco interior designer Jacobs Design, Inc.

This is simply stunning! I cannot wait to find a Costa Bella, or other Lake Travis or Lake Austin De -Tuscan job to implement this look. Can you imagine looking past this monochromatic palette through the windows to the crystal blue water on the lake? But is there not a sense of community responsibility implicit in the term neighborhood? Do we not have an obligation to be “a part of” the whole, in fact a universally “acceptable” part, if not a pleasant one?

In particular, this morning I saw several homes painted in varying shades of green. Some were obviously painted to blend with their surroundings, and rightly so as the elevations, and overall appearance were far less than spectacular. Excellent! Another had a bit of Victorian influence, and the green was well chosen, if a bit bright, accented with a pinkish grey, and a brighter peach, but perfectly within the style of the elevations. Yet another had no discernable reason for being painted green so let’s assume it’s the owner’s favorite color. Kudos go to the implementation on all of these.

Now to my issues…and yes they are mine and you are welcome to disagree…Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery yes, but BAD imitation is just plain SAD! All greens are NOT created equal, and simply because you love a shade or tint of a color does not mean it will transfer to an exterior façade or even trim or accent. Shades, tints, and degrees of color must be carefully chosen to fit with the natural elements in the surroundings. Notice I said “fit” not blend. In greens, just the tiniest change in the amount of blue or yellow can render the color garish, or worst of all “pee” colored. Even colors that look great in sample, or even in the interior, can quickly change into something gross in natural sunlight, overcast shadows, or with green grass, or blue sky against it.

My recommendation, ask if you see a color you like. Most will share the info, as long as you’re not right next door or across the street. (Speaking of which I saw a house just up for sale, freshly painted in the same colors, as the one across the street, except the green looks like bile …I think it will be on the market awhile.)

Greens, reds, and yellows are notoriously difficult to work with in exterior colors. (In interiors as well)

Turquoise may well be Pantones “Color of the Year, but it is something to take care in using on the exterior of a home. (NOTE: Commercial use is very different) Unless the property is in a tropical locale, or on the water, this color more often than not comes off as “tacky” On my excursion today, a bright turquoise railing had me hearing the song “Venus”, seeing Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello romping on the lawn, looking for the ice machine, and trying to find out “where the boy’s are”! Unless you are intentionally creating a period look, take care.

Painting may be the easiest thing to change, but it can be expensive. In fact, I have know people to paint the house, have it look like *^&*, and just leave it because they choose not to spend the money. Simple solution, do it right the first time.

Color consultations are available from $50 and up from many sources. Many Interior Design firms offer “a la cart services for small jobs, and color selection. If paying for such help from a professional bothers you, I recommend calling your local Paint stores. They will have many color combination suggestions and schemes, and also assist with selection. If your town or city has an architecture, or Interior Design department, call them and ask if any students are available for consultation, often at no charge.

By all means express yourself, but admit when you need a bit of help. There are enough eyesores to go around without adding more…and I promise…you WILL be happier too!

Extraordinary Lake Austin Contemporary

Last month, I had the good fortune to attend an event that not only exhibited wonderful contemporary art, was filled with beautiful, happy, intelligent, and charismatic people, but that took place in one of the most phenomenal custom homes I have seen in our fair city in some time.

The event , a collaboration between Deborah Page Projects and Boyd & Boyd Properties, LLC was held at 3402 Mount Bonnell Road, on the shores of Lake Austin, Thursday, January 14. The home was custom designed and built for couple who had intended to live in it here in Austin, but fate had other plans, and they relocated to the East Coast.

Now on the market for a steal of a deal at 3.5 million, the residence was designed by the renowned architectural firm, Andersson-Wise, and superbly executed by leading green builder, Pilgrim Building Company of Austin. The home was also viewed on the Austin Modern Homes Tour in February.

Anderson-Wise was co-founded by legendary architect Charles Moore, and his namesake firm has retained many of his ideals concerning the way a house should be conceived, built, and lived in. Moore’s belief that a sense of community was essential in relating to a site, as well as within a structure is evident in the floor plan and layout of this home.
Rooms are defined, yet open freely into and onto each other, while still retaining their separation. Architectural elements boundry walls, ceilings, floors, adding interest and well defined though subtle division. Unexpected spaces, ledges, openings and niches catch the eye and hold interest with wonder and curiosity, another trademark Moore element. Illusory elements such as mirrors expand the view as in the photo, above.

Beautiful selection of materials including woods of various species, glass, copper, and steel work in tandem to create a livable sculpture, with the hill country view beyond.

Then…there is the pool! Out the glass doors from the living room, one walks a short distance on the Brazilian Mansanduba wood deck to the “beach”, a shallow wading pool, and beyond that, a lap pool extending the length of the property to, and over the edge of the cantilevered structure, ending in the surreal “viewing cube”, a clear glass end hanging precariously over the water. Imagine, swimming your lap, turning and heading towards a blue light, then seemingly swimming into Lake Austin itself.

Of course there is some question as to how much one would really see through the glass, but all that’s beside the point isn’t it.

Adjustable steel shelves are suspended on a wood background

ZigZag cutout follows the edge of the stair

At 3.5 million a steal, yes. More importantly, a property that is more than just a luxury home. More than simply lots of space, expensive materials, and a “statement” but a meaningful architectural sculpture. A building with heart and soul…(and a perfect view). Perhaps it was my own ego, that made me believe that I was so fascinating, but I soon realized that it was my place to answer their questions, and in fact become so.

With that in mind, I created this little outline which I have used for several years in my one sheet brochure, and thought I would share it with the Ava community. Certainly, many Ava members will find much of the information old news, but I hope that there might be some tidbit that will add to their Ava Experience, and yours!

       What is an interior designer?

In many states interior designers, as opposed to decorators, must be licensed, registered, and regulated by a governing board. These bodies review applicants, and based on stringent requirements, grant the title of registered interior designer to those who have successfully met these standards. In addition, most states require a minimum number of approved continuing education credits, including a set number of credits in ADA(Americans with Disabilities Act) compliance, and sustainable design. An interior designer studies, researches, identifies, then develops creative solutions to problems concerning the interior environment, either conceptual or real. Services offered may include programming, space planning, plan development, design analysis, visioning or property enhancement counseling, specifications, and aesthetic evaluation-application.
<dir>
Why should I consider working with a professional designer.
</dir>
An interior designer offers his or her time, resources, experience, knowledge, and expertise to mold and create a space with the clients needs foremost. A licensed designer can save clients from making mistakes or decisions that will later on become problems, pass along discounts, share resources available to the trade only, and alert clients to new trends or products. The client’s needs can be identified, and a program created to satisfy these needs within the parameters of budget, time, and knowledge of materials, construction, building codes, furnishings, and aesthetic principles. Designers find creative solutions as well as technical and practical ones.
<dir>
What about the costs
</dir>
Working with an interior designer does not have to be costly. Project costs do vary greatly depending on whether or not there will be demo and construction, and certainly the amount of remodeling, architectural detailing, or demolition involved will adjust the total. If the project is purely cosmetic, or a redesign, consideration is given based on what items will remain, and what, if any new, purchases will be necessary. The most important thing to remember is that whatever you spend with a interior designer is an investment in your environment, not simply a figure to be tallied in the expense column. Consider, for example, recent statistics which show that upgrading your kitchen or bath has an 80 to 125 per cent recovery at resale, exclusive of the personal joy and pleasure you will experience in the interim. When choosing furnishings and accessories, a designers resources will allow you to see a broader selection, so you can make an educated decision, in other words chose what is exactly right for you, thus eliminating the possibility of bad choices and money ill spent. In addition, often the smaller the budget, the more important the need for a professional as each decision and dollar is more critical.

<dir>
When should I bring an Interior Designer into the project
</dir>
Ideally the designer should be involved during the initial planning stages of a project. When plans are being drawn, decisions can be reviewed and easily changed. Ideas can be discussed and planned for in the future, and ultimately costs can often be reduced due to fewer expensive changes or reworking after construction has begun or been completed. However, it is never too late to bring a professional into the project. In existing or working projects, an Interior Designer can review and analyze the current conditions, assimilate client input and then make recommendations. Often simply having a fresh viewpoint can give the client and project the needed lift. A light face-lift of paint, wall covering, window treatments, accessories, or furnishings may be all that is needed, or perhaps a larger scale transformation. You and your designer can coordinate what is existing with new ideas to create something uniquely tailored for you.
<dir>
What is important in selecting an Interior Designer
</dir>
There are many factors involved in selecting and deciding on your interior designer. Experience, specific knowledge, and registration or licensing as described previously should all be requirements. Reputation is another important quality. Is the individual respected in the community, is he or she involved in the community? Who are the previous clients? These are questions to ask. However, the best way to research designers is to meet and talk with them. Ask questions, and get a feel for who they are, what their goals for the project are, and how they align with yours. Review their work, and discuss the processes used to create this work. Always remember that this should be a very gratifying and long lasting relationship- you are on your way to maximizing your environment and creating the lifestyle you deserve. Be comfortable with whom you choose to help get you there.

Project Profile- College age Son's Room/Overflow Guest Suite

The home was an Italian inspired home designed by Architect Jim LaRue, and built by Sereno Homes. This upper floor bedroom and bath suite belonged to the owners son who was now away at college. This meant the space needed to function as a young mans bedroom, as well as an overflow guest suite.

The carpet, the basic paint color, and some other parameters had been determined. A contemporary feel, cooler colors, simple lines, and JAB fabric, a favorite were given as guides.

My plan was to create a tailored functional space, an homage to clean lines, and pure form, beautiful natural materials, and Italian simplicity; to create a masculine space, without overwhelming an overnight guest.

A custom bed, nightstand, and accent chair were selected from Michael Colca’s Medina Collection. Hand crafted from woods including pecan, and cherry and fabricated at his Driftwood Studio, Michael’s work exhibited the warmth and honesty of material I was looking for. An antique pine gentlemen’s chest, and a 1920’s French Leather club chair from Jean Marc Frey Antiques, still in it’s original leather and fabric upholstery, were then chosen as my concept fell into place.

Custom "Medina"bed, nightstand, and chair from Michael Colca, Framed art, and Champleve' lamp fromAustin Galleries. A contemporary JAB print fabric was selected as an accent for pillows, and dark khaki and blue Duralee fabrics were selected for the dramatic cuffed window curtains, on wood poles.

Metallic bronze liner tiles surround blue porcelain 8" tiles for the countertops. Jab fabric drapery panels with angled bottoms and fringe dress up the shower/tub enclosure. Matching cording is wound around wooden cabinet knobs above the tub for added interest. The news broadcast January 16, 2010 simply means the most current plan is no longer being considered.

As one of the Interior Designers who was Honored to be invited by Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Sandefer, to give a proposal for the 2002 remodel and restoration of "Woodlawn- The Pease Mansion", I was appalled at the 1950's addition to the structure, and although somewhat better designed and implemented, the early 1900's addition was terrible as well. (Both additions have now been removed) The current Governors Mansion, and Woodlawn, were both designed by Abner Cook, and the possibility, in fact probability in my opinion, that the integrity of such a landmark be compromised or quite possibly destroyed by an ill or otherwise, designed addition is unacceptable!

The Statesman Newspaper Link below, shows in plan, the addition, which according to former Historical Commissioner, J.P. Bryan of Alpine is "an appendage that makes no good sense," he said. "It would be like building onto the Alamo." Although this particular addition has been scrapped, it is unlikely that any new plan proposed for an addition will be any better, given that the persons charged with the approval process obviously have no wish to retain the historical, and architectural value of the structure.

Please check out the links below for more information, and please sign the petition to Stop any and all plans for additions to the structure. If the First Family of Texas needs more space, build a new property.

The following is from the petition website

# 537: 12:34 am PST, Jan 18, Mark Moore, Texas

"Historical Landmarks that are altered can loose their historical status. But, most of all, this is not the time to be adding square footage to the Governor's Mansion when the financial status of Texas taxpayers has never been worse.... The mansion will be restored to it's original glory and represent the pride and heritage found in Texas. Politicians and their wives come and go... How in this day and time, can anyone even justify a $25M addition to any single family resident regardless of its historical significance. The average Austin, TX high-end home has a square foot value of around $200 to $250 per square foot. That would mean that the addition would have to be between 100,000 and 125,000 square feet of additional space. Is there really enough acreage on the side lawn of the Governor's Mansion to build a structure the size of a Dillard's department store?"

http://www.thepetitionsite.com/5/stop-the-Governors-Mansion-addition

http://www.statesman.com/news/texas-politics/governor-s-mansion-addition-draws-opponents-162740.html

http://www.gosanangelo.com/news/2010/jan/16/proposed-addition-halted/

Must See Art from Brooke Gassiot Austin Texas "Light Boxes"

Last month I attended a showing of work by my friend Brooke Gassiot, here in Austin. The medium, light boxes...My first thought, after receiving the invitation took me back to the shoe-box dioramas we all made in elementary school, then to so many boring, poorly executed "shadow boxes" we as designers have seen over and over, being presented as something new and different. But I knew Brooke was different...

This...these are different. As you see by my note to Brooke after the show, I was blown away, as was the entire crowd.

"Your shadow boxes are exquisite! So visually different, different in materials, and application, and yet they evoke a sense of familiarity...so strong that one gets lost in them. Your multi-dimensional boxes have a life of their own, and all who viewed them last evening were entranced by their beauty and sincerity. Congratulations!"

"...miniature installations..." as described by -Alissa Bayer, the Gallery Owner

Enough said....you Must See them...

Please check out Brooke Gassiot Light[Box]es

You will not be disappointed!

For the adventurous only!

The newest trend in bathing, is a bit exotic, and well...downright SEXY!

     First there were occluded glass and frosted glass shower and tub, enclosures. Then ribbed glass became popular, and the 80's brought lots of glass brick. Then clear glass became popular. I still remember my mother's reaction the first time she saw a clear glass enclosure at a show home.

   I suppose it was a sense of modesty as well as self consciousness that prevailed in her reaction, and I even experienced the same reaction from clients a few times when I would specify clear enclosures. In todays "spa baths" the tub often interferes with the peaceful look one is working to attain. The translucent quality of glass allows the freedom to design interesting flooring, walls, niches, and anything the designer can come up without compromise. These tubs are ideal for bathrooms with limited space, redesign or retrofits. Expect a price tag beginning at $5000 and up.

Sure does make you want to hit the gym and work out!!

Glamour is Back!

I have always been a huge fan of the movies from the 30's and 40's. It is almost ceremonial, like a Japanese Tea ceremony. It is not what you are doing, but HOW...enjoy and celebrate the process.

Glamour has gotten a bad rap lately, and even though the word originally meant "illusion" essentially, it is not fake or false. If a room is glamorous, and it makes you feel good, that is not an illusion...enjoy and celebrate the process....enjoy and celebrate glamour!

I could of course go on and on, but I recommend you clink the links below and read for yourself, knowing that Ms. Showers and I share many of the same philosophies, likes, and dislikes, and most importantly these room essentials:

Make good eye-level lighting a priority. "Nothing is more important," says Showers, who sprinkles rooms with curvy lamps and sparkly sconces to create an intimate glow.

Use color to create a mood for each room. Prime example? "I wanted my dining room in Dallas to feel cool and calming, so I chose a wonderful sea color. Everyone loves it."

Style should not preclude comfort. "Chairs and sofas should be incredibly comfortable; otherwise, no one wants to sit in the room."

Invest in at least one great piece of furniture - preferably an antique. "This is what adds character."

Place a table by every chair for drinks. "Enough said!"

"A lot of people say is it OK to have a mirror in every room. I say it’s not OK not to. A mirror can add a window on a wall, and it also adds an element of sparkle or shimmer."

Jan Showers Interview #1 San Antonio Express News

Jan Showers Interview #2 Dallas Morning News

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(51, 102, 51); After dreaming of having a fabulous Studio/office on West Sixth here in Austin, as long as I can remember, even before I knew what I would be doing, I moved after 8 1/2 years.

I loved this space, and put a great deal of heart, soul, and design into it after taking the lease in 2000. Assisted by Jennifer O'Day of Medici Designs, who interpreted my designs in beautiful faux and trompe l'oeil work, Sharon St John, of St John Landscapes, and Bill Masuzo, The Wallmaster (wallpaper installer) I had my dream space.
The house itself was built in 1928, and by the end of Summer 2008, it was showing it. After the May storm in 08 took out the electrical in the entire front of the space, things continued downhill. A plumbing leak developed under the house, which when repaired caused many others. A ridiculously bad tree trimming by an overzealous property manager took all the shade away, running the a/c bill $125 higher for the first month, more than my highest ever.

Believe it or not that was not all....On Memorial Day a drunk driver drag racing his buddy down 6th, lost control of his car, spun around, landing in the front yard, destroying plants, landscaping, and a retaining wall. Another 24" and he would

have plowed through the front windows into the conference room, where we were putting presentation boards together. He ran from the scene and falsely called his car in stolen to APD, a felony. So no insurance for me as they don't pay on felony investigations...

The plumbing needed to be redone, the electrical system as well, and the front landscaping was a mess. There was no way I could handle working in that environment, while these repairs were made. As a treasured client remarked "now its your turn", referring to the multiple remodels we have done together.

As sad as I was to leave my dream studio, and my beloved neighbors The Flower Studio, Andrew Sterling, and Linda Asaf Designs, traffic, noise, and par

king were not ideal. I have taken a space not far from the old place, not as large, but certainly adequate, and am looking for new digs.

That said, I would like to remember the old place in her glory days.
